Ko `ie `ie Loko I`a

Maui's Ancient Fishpond

Ko `ie `ie Loko I `a sits in front of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. It is part of the Kalepolepo Park, in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii.  Ko `ie `ie, meaning "rapid current" is the best preserved loko kuapa along the South Maui shoreline and was traditionally reserved for the ali`i or chiefs.  The local community has embraced the fishpond and plans are underway to rebuild the fishpond walls and perpetuate Ko `ie `ie Loko I `a as a community landmark. Our students have spent this school year learning about the fishpond. Follow the links below to see our students work and learn about Ko `ie `ie Loko I `a.
