Lesson Plan

 

Title: Baby Duck's Swimming Lesson, Illustrated by Mrs. Yoshida's Class

Subject/Topic: In our studies of cultures around the world, we visited China and celebrated Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon.

Materials: Books: Three Little Ducks by June Melser; The Story of Ping by _____; chart paper; Paper, markers & crayons; computer

Software Used: ClarisWorks, Scanner, ClarisHomePage

Lesson:

Concept Map of China: Discuss students prior knowledge of China.

Research Chinese Culture: Share different stories such as The Story of Ping, posters, web sites about China. Students learn about different aspects of the culture through different media. (2-3 weeks)

Storytelling: I retold a story my husband told my unborn baby called Baby Duck's Swimming Lesson. I asked the class to publish the story for the baby. (10-15 minutes)

Research: We read Three Little Ducks and used our previous knowledge from The Story of Ping to research ducks. We made a concept map about ducks. Students used their research to illustrate the story. (10-15 minutes)

Text was printed, cut, and glued to the bottom of each illustration. (10 minutes)

Illustrating: Students pictures needed to match the text they volunteered to illustrate. Students worked individually using paper, markers and crayons to illustrate. (35-40 minutes)

Sequencing: After students completed pictures, they sequenced their drawings by the text. (5 minutes)

Publishing: Hard copy of book was bound and kept in classroom library. (5 minutes) Illustrations were scanned and text was copied from a disk (Shared Folder) for the Electronic Book Contest. Text and pictures were put on to the web site using ClarisHomePage. (Mahalo Cyndi and her Computer Bugs)
