Tell Me a Story

Purpose
1. Students will gain an understanding of Haiku School's 3 Respect rules.
2. Students will use KidPix,drama and iMovie to demonstrate the concepts of Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Respect for Property.
3. Students will share their work with other members of the school community.
Standards
1. Technology as a tool for productivity:
Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications, and producing other creative works.
2. Technology as a tool for communication:
Students use technology to communicate, to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences. Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
3. Social Studies- Democracy:
Students understand and demonstrate the principles and values underlying American constitutional democracy:
Demonstrate respect for self and others, regardless of differences.
4. Social Studies- Citizenship /Participation
Students understand roles, rights, and responsibilities of American citizens and participate in improving the quality of life in their community.
Activities
1. Students will discuss as a class the meaning of the school rules: Respect for self, Respect for others, Respect for property. They will brainstorm examples of each.
2. Students will review and practice use of KidPix drawing tools. They will use tools to draw and example of one of the respect rules.
3. In small groups, students will dramatize a negative example of each rule and then a corrected scenario showing the positive alternative. Teacher will video the dramatization.
4. Teacher will compile videos and KidPix art into an iMovie, with students adding audio for their segments.
Timeline
Week of 9/9/02:
1. Students will practice KidPix drawing skills, using 2 classroom computers equipped with KidPix2. Five students per day will work at the computer.
2. Students will participate in a class discussion of the 3 school rules of Respect. Students will brainstorm and compile a list of possible examples and scenarios.
Weeks of 9/16/02 - 9/23/02
1. Students will choose an example of one of the rules from the class list to illustrate using KidPix. Students will begin working on their drawings, two students at a time for 30 minute time blocks.
2. In small groups, students will plan a short dramatization of a scenario showing a negative use of one of the rules, and then the positive (correct) alternative.
Students will practice their skits.
Week of 9/30/02
1. Student groups will finalize their skits. Teacher will video their presentation.
2. Students will complete their KidPix drawings.
Week of 10/7/02
1. Teacher will begin compile the drawings and video segments into an iMovie.
2. Students will add the audio to their segment of the iMovie.
3. Class will evaluate their KidPix work and how they worked together in small groups.
4. Finished product will be shared with the school community.
