Jan Ernst Matzeliger
[1852-1889]
Jan E. Matzeliger was born on 1852 and died on 1889. Jan was immigrated to the U.S. at age 18 and worked at a shoe factory in Philadelphia. His father was a dutch colonial engineer in 1852. His mother was a black Dutch women.
He took classes at night to learn english. soon he was able to read well enough to study books. He worked at a shoe shop and saw people tying with there hands. Then he thought of an idea. He should make a machine that sews shoes.
He did hear people say “no, he can’t do it” but he did. He succeeded to make the automatic shoe lasting machine! He was afforded 50$ and 1,500$. He got it by making the automatic shoe lasting machine. In 1992, the U.S. made a postage stamp in honor of Matzeliger of the shoe lasting machine.
He never married and never had kids because he died to soon at age 37.
Elijah McCoy
Birth date: May 2,1843 or 1844
Death: October 10,1929
Elijah McCoy was a great inventor. Ha was born at Colchester, Ontario,Canada. Elijah invented The Steam Engine Lubricator in 1872. The reason he made the steam engine lubricator is to help people with their things. He also designed the railroad locomotive after the civil war. The jobs that helped him make the lubricator were oil man, fireman. Also he learned to be a mechanical engineer in Edinburgh.
Elijah McCoy’s parents were George and Mildred McCoy. He had two wife's. The first one was Ann Elizabeth Stewart. The second one was Mary Eleanor. They both died and had no kids. Elijah also had 11 more brother and sisters.
Elijah McCoy had 72 patents. He also had a day named after him in the year 1975. They called it Elijah McCoy Day. Elijah McCoy died at the age 86 in Detroit Michigan.
Garret A. Morgan
Garret Morgan had a very interesting life. He was born on March 4th, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. Garret Morgan is a famous African Americn black inventor.
Garret Morgan invented lots of things. One of them was the traffic signal. Garret Morgan wanted to invent the traffic signal when a horse carriage and an automobile collided togeter and hurt themselves. So, Garret Morgan invented the traffic signal for people to be safe and the traffic signal is automatic.
Garret Morgan also invented the gas mask. Though people say some other inventors invented it and Garret put a patent on it. Nobody knows if it is true or not. He invented the gas mask to go in smoke to save people.
This is another part of Garret’s life. When he was fourteen he moved to Cincinnati to get a job. In 1895 he moved to Cleaveland, Ohio. He worked as a sewing machine repairman for a clothing manufacture. He was married to Madge Nelson but ended up in divorce. Later on he married Maryann Hassek. Garret Morgan was the seventh of eleven children. Garret and Maryann had 3 sons. Garret’s education stopped at grade 6. Then he hired a tutor. Garret Morgan died on July 27th, 1963. He was buried in Cleaveland, Ohio in Lakeview cemetary. That was Garret Morgan’s life.
John P. Parker
John p. parker was born on February 2 1827 in Norfolk, Virginia. He died on January 30, 1900. John p. parker’s childhood wasn’t very good he was a slave until he was 18. He got sold from his mom number’s of times. One of the times he got sold to a physician who taught him to read and write. His mom was a slave and his dad was a wealthy white man.
When he was nineteen he conducted in a underground railroad. John p. parker got married to Miranda Boulden. They had six children one of them is Hortense parker. John p. parker’s dads name is John r. parker. Then later on in his life he invented the tobacco presser. The tobacco presser helped to press tobacco.
