Thomas Jennings

Thomas Jennings was born on 1791 in New York and died on 1859 and no one knows where he died. An accomplishment of Thomas Jennings is that he was the first African American to receive a patent. Mr. Jennings has had difficult finding jobs but found a job being a tailor. Thomas Jennings freed his family from slavery by paying off the bill, he got his money from the patent.
He also became a secretary for an annual convention at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had no education because they were slaves.
Thomas Jenning’s invention is called dry scouring. He tried finding materials to make his invention. He made a company.


Lonnie G. Johnson



Lonnie Johnson was born on October 6,1949. He went to Williamson High School and graduated college. After working for NASA he got married and had daughter named Aneka.

Lonnie got an idea from NASA to make a squirt gun. He invented it in 1989. His dad Robert a truck driver cheered him on to success. He invented more and more he has over 40 patents now. He died on June 16,1970, Toronto,Ontario,Canada.


 

Frederick McKinley Jones

Frederick McKinley Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 17, 1892 or 1893, nobody knows the exact date. His nationality is American. His parents died when Frederick was only a toddler. He grew up as an orphan and was taught by a priest. Frederick McKinley Jones only got up to a sixth grade education.

Here are some interesting facts in the life of Frederick McKinley Jones. Frederick McKinley Jones was taught to be a mechanic in World War 1. One of the important people in Frederick’s life was the priest who taught him everything he knew. Frederick McKinley Jones invented over 70 different inventions but only patented around 60 of those inventions such as the movie-ticket suspencer and the automatic refrigeration for long-hauled trucks. Frederick M. Jones died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 21, 1961.


Marjorie Joyner


Marjorie Joyner was born October 24 1896 in Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia. She was the granddaughter of a slave and a white slave owner. She was one of 13 children. In 1912 she moved to Chicago to live with her mother after her parents divorced.
In 1916 she enrolled to beauty school and became the first woman to graduate school. Shortly after graduating she met Madame CJ Walker who was selling hair care products and got into business with her. In 1928 she invented the permanent waving machine to make permed or curled hair styles last for days.
She married Robert E. Joyner at age 20. She had 2 daughters. When Madame CJ Walker died in 1919 Marjorie became vice-president of the company. She and thousands of employee’s sold beauty products door-to-door. In 1973 she was awarded a Bachelors in phscology from Bethune Cookman college.
Marjorie Joyner died on December 7, 1994 and lived to be 98 years-old. Her daughter Barbara Joyner Powell lives today.
