George washington was born on a plantation on February 11,1732. Later in his life five brothers and sisters were born. George liked to fish, to swim, and to ride horses.
European countries sent settlers all over the world to live in colonies. The land provided lot's of valuables like gold, and spices, or in the case of America crops like cotton or tobacco. England owned all thirteen colonies including Virginia where George was born.
George didn't live by any schools so he learned how to do reading, writing and arithmatic from a tutor. A teacher that travels all around the world and teaches people that can't go to school for many different reasons. George didn't spell as well as other people that he knew but he practiced as much as he could so he could get better at it.
One day George was wandering around the farm that his father owned looking for something to do. So he got out his fathers ax and started to cut down a cherry tree so his family could eat some cherries and they could also save some. When he was finished putting away the ax and stuff his father walked outside and asked George: Who cut down this cherry tree? George knew he was going to get in trouble but he was honest. He told his father that it was him. It was him that cut down the cherry tree. George's father was mad but he was glad that his son told the truth.
When the tutor went away George Washington stayed with his mother. He helped his mother run the farm and he helped his mother take care of his younger brothers and sisters. They all grew up fast.
One day George was cleaning and he found some of his surveying tools he decided that he might become a surveyer when he grew up. George tried to survey in a pine forest and in a field that he lived close to. He was good at math and being good at math is good if you are going to be a surveyer. George's father died when he was eleven years old. George still missed his father but he had someone to count on. That someone was his step brother. His name was Lawrence. He was fourteen years older than him. He was George's elder. George's step father sent Lawrence to go to school in England before his real father died. Lawrence was an officer for the English war fighting in the Carribean.
When the war was over Lawrence came to America to run his own farm and sell tobacco to people because in those days tobacco was very popular. He sold tobacco so he could earn money for clothing so he could by clothing, food, and other things that you need to survive. He named the farm Mount Vernon.
When George was fifteen he moved to Mount Vernon to live with his half brother and his wife. A few months later Lawrence got sick and George got a very bad disease that is kind of like chicken pox, but much worse it is called small pox. Small pox killed many people and left others with teribble scars. Sometimes the bad disease left people blind or injured many other ways. In those days they didn't have a cure for it. But the disease vanished from him.
George lived a happy life on Mount Vernon with his wife, but one day Martha was walking in the park with her children and Jack got very sick. A couple of weeks later he died. George's family was being destroyed, he knew that he was going to die soon too. George later took the job that Lawrence had when he was alive. That job was being a soldier for the Virginia army.
In 1753, George got called to travel to Fort Le Boeuf. The travel was very dangerous but George had enough courage to do it. So George went on the journey. When he got there the french comannder read the letter that the govener sent with George and said no! The french nor the Indians would give up America with out a fight.
The journey marked the beginning of the French and Indian War.
George moved to a little house surrounded by grass, beautiful plants and trees. He had an outhouse on the land that he owned. He also had a farm on the land too. In the old days West Virginia was called the Back Country. Most of the land in West Virginia was just plain wilderness.
Slaves slowly started being sent to Virginia from Africa and George wasn't happy about it so he tried to do something about it. The slaves were being sold to farmers and fairly rich people that lived in Virginia. The slaves were locked in chains around their neck their hands and their feet. The people that were sent from Africa were being treated like animals. Some of the owners were nice to there slaves. But most of them were horrible to their slaves. The people that ship the slaves ship them in a small roofless boats with no food or any of the stuff that they need to survive.
George didn't like slavery at all. He tried to stop it for ever but when Abraham Lincoln was alive slavery came back again. George failed when he tried to stop slavery for ever. When George Washington was growing up there weren't that many towns. There were only a few towns and there were barely any houses in them. Williamsburg was the biggest town in Virginia. George died in 1897 when he was 67.
