Pun Lesson

Objective: Students will increase their knowledge of homonyms and become familiar with puns.

Materials: Chart paper, drawing paper, computers

Timeline: approximately two weeks

Our class expanded on a mini lesson about homonyms from our Spelling textbook by making a list of all the homonyms we could think of. We added to the list each day for one week as we thought of them.

Then I read to them some puns. We discussed how the homonym was used in each pun. As a group we used our list of homonyms and made up some new puns. After checking that each student knew what a pun was, each student was assigned to make up a pun. After the pun was checked, the student drew a picture for their pun.

The students then drew their picture in the drawing component of ClarisWorks and their text was pulled in from a file that I set up.

The students enjoyed coming up with and sharing their puns. Some of them were frustrated that they couldn't get their computer picture to look like their hand drawn picture. However, when I do this lesson again I will still have the students draw their picture first so that they don't waste their computer time thinking of what they would draw.
