Book our class read: How to Hide An Octopus by Ruth Heller
Draw Me An Ocean by Eric Carle
Time Line: Month -from January 20th-February 17th, 2000
List steps involved in completing this project for the webpage. Include programs used and approximate time lines:
1. We read How To Hide An Octopus on one day and discussed the various
sea creatures included in the book. We made a class list of all the
names of fish and other sea animals we wanted to include in a book
about the ocean. We read about and researched sea animals from
many non-fiction books we borrowed from the school library and we added
more names to our sea animals list.
2. Another day, we read Draw Me A Star, by Eric Carle and looked at how
the author used words to descibe the main object in the picture. I asked
the students to describe a lion, a lamb, a baby, a motorcycle, etc.... This
was a lead into descriptive words called adjectives. We discussed
adjectives to decribe our sea creatures for our book.
3. The next step was to make a list of the creatures we really wanted to use
in our book and since we had so many, we had to vote for the best ones.
When we eliminated the ones we didn't want, we came up with eight that
we wanted. Then as a class assigned pages to each person and each
person came up with adjectives to describe their sea creature.
4. Now it was time to do our first rough draft drawing! I gave each child a plain
white piece of paper and they drew their sea animals they were assigned.
I came around and as they told me their descriptive words for their sea
animal, I wrote down their sentences. For example, "Draw me an electric
eel, said the whale. " And, "Draw me a strong shark, said the angelfish."
5. Once all rough drafts were completed, I took the children to the computer
lab to create their final drafts on the KID PIX program.
6. When all pages were completed, I pulled the pages for one class book for
the students to read in class and take home and another book for the
Electronic Book Contest. I pulled the EBC pages into a folder and then
Cyndi put it on our schools web page. Our final class book product, "Draw
Me An Ocean" can be found at url http:///www.kamalii.k12.hi.us/EBC2000/
