Title: The Living Dragon retold by Mrs. Yoshida's Class
Subject/Topic: In our studies of cultures around the world, we visited China and celebrated Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon.
Materials: Paper, markers & crayons, Computer with Presentation System,
Software Used: ClarisWorks, Scanner, ClarisHomePage
Lesson:
Concept Map of China: Discuss students prior knowledge of China.
Research Chinese Culture: Share different stories, posters, web sites about China. Students learn about different aspects of the culture through different media. (2-3 weeks)
Storytelling: I read a story to the class about The Seven Dragons. Students were not used to hearing stories without pictures. We discussed the tradition of storytelling. (10-15 minutes)
Retelling: Students were asked to put the oral story into a book. Students retelling sentences were typed on the computer using ClarisWorks. Students could view the text on the media presentation system. This allowed us to edit quickly. Text was printed, cut, and glued to the bottom of each illustration. (15-20 minutes)
Illustrating: Students pictures needed to match the text they volunteered to illustrate. Students worked in pairs using paper, markers and crayons to illustrate. (30 minutes)
Sequencing: After students completed pictures, they sequenced their drawings by the text. (5 minutes)
Publishing: Hard copy of book was bound and kept in classroom library. (5 minutes) Illustrations were scanned and text was copied from a disk (Shared Folder) for the Electronic Book Contest. Text and pictures were put on to the web site using ClarisHomePage. (Mahalo Cyndi and her Computer Bugs)
