Quick as A Cricket

Objectives: children will be introduced to the 'Q' sound, and will

compare opposites in terms of vocabulary describing movement.

Materials: Quick as A Cricket (children's book), 'Q' letter card, drawing

paper, pencils, crayons, markers, and the computer program

Kid Pix.

Time Spent: 1 hour students and teacher together; 30 minutes just teacher

Procedure: 1. Introduce the letter 'Q' and it's sound, using the letter card,

and by carefully pronouncing the sound.

2. Together, brainstorm some 'Q' words.

3. Share the book, Quick as a Cricket, with the children,

reminding them of the 'Q' in Quick.

4. After reading, discuss the story. Compare the animal

opposites in the book, such as quick as a cricket...slow as a

snail.

5. Explain to the children that we will be "acting-out the story."

Ask them to listen carefully as you read the story again. This

time, they should act out the animal movement as you read.

*have a good time with this activity

6. After settling the children, pass out drawing paper and

pencils, crayons, etc. Have each child draw an animal of

their choosing. Walk by and jot down their ideas on the

animals movement. (eg. "My tiger is fast")

Extension: After the children have finished their drawings, you will want to take them and put them away, as first drafts. Later, as a class, or individually, have the students use their rough drafts to construct pictures on the computer program. The teacher can add the text at this time, or later. When all of the children have finished, print the pictures and they can be bound as a classroom book, or laminated and displayed.
