Electronic Book Contest

Lesson Plan:

Subjects covered: Reading, Creative writing, Social Studies and Art

Topic of Book: Twas the Night Before Christmas

Timeline: 2 months

Programs used: Claris Works and Claris Works for Kids

At Christmas, I wanted my students to do a fun project that they could really get creative with in their writing. I read them the story Twas the night before Christmas. Then, I told them that they would have to rewrite the story using ideas and words from another country.

I broke the class up into groups of 3 and had them decide on the country they were going to further research. After the countries were selected, the students had to rewrite the story Twas the night before Christmas by adding in details that would match with their countries culture.

Next, they did rough drafts to map out how their story books were going to look. Then, they used Claris Works for kids and Claris Works to create their stories. They cut and pasted their work until it was in the correct order. After the stories were completed, the class voted on the one that would go into the Electronic book contest.

This was a long and drawn out project that took a lot of lab time. The students really enjoyed the product, but was not to thrilled about the amount of writing that it took to get the hard copy completed. They worked extremely wall with one another, each person taking their turn to contribute to the books success.
